I would be interested in seeing clarity on what you think will happen instead of merit. Heredity? Share of the spoils? Something else?

It seems like some form of meritocracy is necessary for advancement of science and such. Even ancient Babylon had a form of that with taking the best of the conquered peoples and training them in the ways of the Babylonians. (See the Book of Daniel.)

I may not understand exactly what you are encompassing in the term meritocracy though, so I could use some clarification.
